Tanjore paintings, also known as Thanjavur paintings, are a classical form of Indian art that originated in Thanjavur. Known for their rich colors, surface richness, and iconic use of gold foil, these paintings developed under the patronage of South Indian rulers, particularly during the Maratha period in the 17th century. Traditionally created on wooden panels, the artworks feature a unique technique that combines painting with relief (gesso) work, where a paste is used to create raised surfaces, especially for jewelry and ornamental details. These areas are then embellished with gold foil and sometimes inlaid with glass beads or semi-precious stones, giving the paintings a luminous and opulent quality.

The subjects of Tanjore paintings are predominantly devotional, often depicting Hindu deities such as Krishna, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Ganesha, as well as scenes from epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The compositions typically place the main figure at the center, adorned with elaborate arches and symbolic halos, emphasizing divinity and symmetry. More than decorative objects, Tanjore paintings hold deep spiritual significance and are often used in homes and temples as sacred icons believed to invite blessings, prosperity, and positive energy.
